Five Must-Have Essential Oils for Fall
I’ve been using essential oils daily to support my family’s physical and emotional wellness since the spring of 2014. I am amazed all the time at what a difference they have made for us. From supporting our bodies to helping us deal with emotions and everything in between, essential oils are such an important part of our natural lifestyle. As we cycle through the seasons, I’ve found that there are several oils and oil blends that we use more often at different times of the year. The essential oils we use the most in the fall months are the single oil of Orange and four essential oil blends: Thieves, DiGize, Breathe Again and Christmas Spirit. (Buy them here.)
Read on to find out how I use these lovely essential oils to support my family’s physical and emotional wellness during the fall season.
Thieves Essential Oil Blend
The thieves essential oil blend is one that I try to keep on hand at all times. Thieves oil consists of clove oil, lemon oil, cinnamon bark oil, eucalyptus radiata oil and rosemary oil. Because of its powerful combination of oils, Thieves oil offers incredible support to the immune system. That’s the number one reason this oil is the first one on my list of essential oils for fall.
Even though we homeschool, we’re around enough children and adults who spend time cooped up in the school setting where germs abound and spread like . . . well . . . viruses. Thieves gives our immune system the boost it needs to do its job.
My favorite way to use thieves oil is to diffuse a few drops for 30 minutes at a time. If you’ve never smelled thieves oil, you’re in for a treat. I always tell people that it smells like fall and Christmas and warmth and happiness. My house smells amazing when I’m diffusing thieves oil.
Other ways we use thieves oil is to apply it to the bottoms of the feet after heavily diluting it (I use at least four drops of carrier oil to one drop of thieves) and in my homemade toothpaste and homemade mouthwash. I also use thieves oil in a glass spray bottle with water to clean my home during the fall months. It gets my home really clean and leaves a wonderful scent behind. Here is a post I wrote about the benefits and uses of thieves oil for more information.
Breathe Again Essential Oil Blend
Breathe Again essential oil blend is a literal breath of fresh air for my family. Breath Again essential oil blend does exactly what it sounds like it does — it helps to support a healthy respiratory system.
Breath Again contains eucalyptus staigeriana, eucalyptus globulus, laural, rose hip, peppermint, eucalyptus radiata, copaiba, myrtle, manuka and eucalyptus blue. In other words, it packs a powerful, but supportive, punch.
Each of the ingredients in Breath Again works together to provide respiratory support, promote calming, balance, purification and emotional elevation.
I keep at least three bottles of Breath Again on hand during the fall and winter seasons. My husband takes one with him where ever he goes — it’s one of his favorite oil blends! I keep one bottle in my purse and another at home for convenient access for the whole family. Breathe Again comes in a pretty roll-on bottle and is already diluted. We roll it on our neck, chest and under and across our nose (a little dab will do ya here!) for extra respiratory support.
DiGize Essential Oil Blend
DiGize essential oil blend is another of my must-have essential oils for fall. To be totally honest, I make sure we always have DiGize on hand, year around, no exceptions. It’s just that important to our natural wellness lifestyle.
DiGize works like no other oil blend to promote healthy digestive system function. Like Thieves, it’s one that really helps out when we’re exposed to the masses of folks who don’t get to breathe fresh air throughout the day because they are shut away in schools and office buildings.
DiGize contains tarragon, ginger, peppermint, juniper, fennel, lemongrass, anise, and patchouli oils. Each of these oils is powerful alone, but when combined they work hard to make sure your digestive system gets on track.
While I don’t often recommend ingesting essential oils, DiGize is one of the few oils that I actually put in a gel capsule and swallow. I only use 3-4 drops and I make sure they are diluted at least 100% with my favorite carrier oil. When I receive a new bottle of DiGize the first thing I do is pour half of it into another bottle and fill the remaining space in each bottle with a carrier oil. Since I do not allow my children to ingest any essential oils, this pre-dilution makes it easy for them to grab a bottle and rub it on their tummies or the soles of their feet without having to create the proper, safe dilution themselves.
Orange Essential Oil
The citrus essential oils (and there are so many of them!) are my favorite essential oils. They liven up any blend and bring a host of benefits for all of their uses. While my favorite citrus essential oil changes with the season, Orange essential oils is my favorite fall citrus oil without a doubt.
Orange essential oil simply blends well with the other scents of the fall and holiday season. Paired with clove or cinnamon or nutmeg oils, orange oil lightens the atmosphere and promotes calming.
Did you know that historically oranges have been a symbol of generosity and gratitude? I can’t imagine a more perfect single essential oil for this time of year when so many of us are expressing our gratitude and displaying our generosity.
I find that orange oil helps to promote a happier mood for my family. Orange oil helps us to relax when things get really hectic in the fall months and causes us to interact with each other a kinder, more gentle way.
As I’ve already mentioned, I love to diffuse orange essential oil, sometimes alone and often mixed with another heavier-scented oil through the fall season. I also like to clean with orange essential oil mixed with water in a glass spray bottle.
Christmas Spirit Essential Oil Blend
Christmas Spirit essential oil blend is a magical blend of orange, cinnamon bark and spruce essential oils. It does exactly what you might think it does: Brings to mind the Christmas season through it’s beautiful “Christmas” aroma.
This is a fun “bonus” oil to keep on hand. While I love to use it around Thanksgiving and when we begin to prep for Christmas, this oil is actually great for all year long when you are feeling nostalgic for the spirit of Christmas.
Did you know that our sense of smell is responsible for conjuring up more memories than any other sense? That’s why the smell of beloved childhood comfort foods or a shirt left behind by someone you love can bring up such emotions.
Christmas Spirit rounds out my list of must-have essential oils for the fall. Christmas Spirit is one of the least expensive essential oils, but usually has a limit on the amount you can order, so order soon to have your home smell like Christmas this fall season!
