Homemade Chocolate Milk Mix – Only Three Ingredients

Do your kiddos love chocolate milk? My boys love chocolate milk and so do I. It’s a delicious and satisfying snack or dessert.

My homemade chocolate milk mix is easy to make and relies on real food ingredients. These simple, healthy ingredients make my homemade chocolate milk mix taste like a gourmet drink when mixed with your favorite animal milk, nut milk, or – my favorite – coconut milk.

Here’s a little secret – my chocolate milk mix is really good in coffee. A few teaspoons of it in a cup of coffee makes a decadent mocha. Yum!

How to Make a Healthy Homemade Chocolate Milk Mix

I have a confession.  Before we began our real food journey my children drank chocolate milk made with vitamin-enriched chocolate powder almost every day.

I was happy that they were getting vitamins and “X% less sugar than other brands” and they were happily addicted to the sugar and other ingredients in the mix.

Like many moms, I had no idea that store-bought chocolate milk mix was not really as healthy as its advertising claimed. Of course, my eyes are open now and I know that I can make a healthier version at home.

After we switched to a real food diet, I slowly weaned them off of the pre-made chocolate mix.  Eventually, I created my own homemade chocolate milk mix that contains three simple ingredients and no synthetic vitamins, refined sugar or salt, or artificial flavors.

The sweetener I use in this homemade chocolate milk mix is coconut sugar. You can also use sucanat, maple sugar, or other natural (dry) sweetener.

Of course, just because we’re using a sugar that has its nutrients intact we can’t consume it with abandon. Your total ‘sweet’ intake should only be about 5% of your total food consumption.

This recipe can also be used for hot cocoa or as a topping to dust on yogurt.

Homemade Chocolate Milk Powder Recipe

Ingredients
2 cups coconut sugar
2/3 cup cocoa powder
1/2 tsp salt

You can use more or less sugar than the recipe calls for. It’s simply a matter of taste. Now that our family eats a mostly low carb/high fat diet we use less sugar because the original recipe is too sweet for our changed tastes.

Instructions

Combine the coconut sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a food processor.

Store in an airtight glass container.

1 tbsp of mix per 8 ozs of milk, more or less to taste, of course.
